made several years ago, my husband and I traveled to Scotland. We were lucky enough to get discounts on airline tickets and hotels. We even had an additional discount on our car hire when booking the whole package together.
The city of Glasgow has

arrival, and in which city it is! We have our rental car at the airport and drove to our hotel was an excellent location for sightseeing on foot.
about 21:00 clock, after a short nap to reduce jet lag, we headed to the discovery of Glasgow and we found it a surprisingly lively nightlife.

We went to Sauchiehall Street, famous for its many shops and bars. For someone with a hunger strike attack late at night in Glasgow is ideal. At about 22:15, we ate fresh fish and tasty and the chips from a popular site that is open until the wee hours.
We then went to a pub for a few pints before returning to the hotel.

The next day we headed to the beautiful city of Edinburgh. Unfortunately, we did not rent a GPS with our rental car and that was a big mistake. We went in search of our hotel for at least 4 hours. It was not entirely unpleasant, Edinburgh is a beautiful place, but I recommend that your sightseeing on your own, and not looking for your hotel.
We started the next morning to see what Edinburgh has to offer. We went to Edinburgh Castle, and there is much to see, it made our morning. Having walked through the streets to Kiltmakers and Weber, where we saw the process of business made kilts, bought some souvenirs and photos we had taken off in full Scottish dress. It was really fun, and people who ran the place was very friendly to all tourists. Then we had lunch and then just shopping in the souvenir shops for the rest of the day.
After we visited Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. Stirling, we went to Perth. Although we do not much there, it was a pleasant city to stroll and enjoy the view over the River Tay.
In Perth, Aberdeen has come. We visited the Aberdeen Maritime Museum Provost Ross House, the oldest house in Aberdeen is second. We also visited David Welch Winter Gardens, a beautiful garden with an impressive array of plants, flowers covered swimming pools and fish. They were exposed to so many rare and exotic plants around the world, you could get lost in the beauty of the whole.
Aberdeen began, we made our way to Dunkeld, where our next reservation was, so we thought. We had our hotel is a little confused, and instead of having a room at night in Dunkeld in particular, we had a reservation in a small town called Ballater.
We had to drive through the mountains that night to get Grampian Ballater. We stopped on the way to a little restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious dinner, steak Diane, beef cow Highland.
Although it is only a 60-mile drive, it took a while to get there, because you would not know it began to snow! We were not even sure if we in the right direction because it was snowing so hard that the signs were covered and all we had was an atlas. Fortunately, we have, but we got into our hotel in Ballater midnight. On arrival the staff was very nice and friendly with our situation and gave us a room upgrade and a small bottle of wine. When we arrived the next day we went to check into the area. The town of Ballater is very small with many outdoor activities, skiing, hiking, biking, etc. Since we are not very oriented winter sports, we have spent only one night.
We went back to Dunkeld in the coming days and stayed at the Hilton Dunkeld House. It was incredible. On Saturday evening they had a wonderful dinner and an orchestra plays the music of traditional Scottish dancing. Although the kitchen closes at 9:30, the band played on and the guests danced till late into the evening. If you are ever in Dunkeld on a weekend, I recommend you stay on the property, and dinner in the living room to this wonderful experience.
After

Dunkeld was our next stop in Inverness. Inverness was by far my favorite city in Scotland. It is small enough that you do not feel overwhelmed, and you can not really lost, but it is big enough to do for many things, day and night. We went shopping on High Street, visited the Loch Ness and took many pictures. The people were very friendly, nice and informative.
After

Inverness, we drove through the Highlands in the next few days, we have a lot of time going from place to place, to enjoy the scenery. I have many pictures of sheep and highland cattle fresh looking. We drove along the coast and ended up staying in a lighthouse (Rua Reidh) Melvaig hotel just outside the village, on the west coast of Scotland. After leaving Rua Reidh we drove back to Inverness for a few days because we liked it so well. We had a few more visitors and guided tours throughout the day and buy local specialties to take home.
Finally it was time to return to Glasgow Airport. The last night we stayed at the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport is the airport grounds, so we only had to walk through the terminal.
Our time in Scotland seemed to go too fast, I was sad to see the end. I hope we can come back and do something new, and some things that we do not have to do the first time. If you ever have the opportunity to target = “_new” Travel in Scotland , the Jump to chance. And do not forget to make sure when you book your rental car to say “YES” to GPS!

Hi, my name is Linda Shute from New Jersey and I’d like to tell you about my exciting trip to Scotland and “The Highlands”. My hunger to travel to far away places has not diminished as I have grow older I still enjoy far away places and like to meet the folks who live there. Being an avid horse enthusiast, and riding since childhood, I like to combine these two pleasures whenever I can.

One day while browsing my new travel catalogue from Equitours, (they offer worldwide riding holidays), I found a trip to Scotland that I just couldn’t pass up. I phoned them and booked the horseback trip and extended the trip to include a week of traveling via rental car and stay at Bed-and-Breakfast homes.

This would ensure I would get off the beaten path to meet the local people and just maybe get a glimpse of the Loch Ness Monster.

Unlike the trip I took to Ireland, first I did the horseback trip and then traveled on my own in a rental car.

This time I drove around first, then did the horseback trip.

Off to the travel agent I went with checkbook in hand. I paid for the airline tickets and booked the rental car and picked up the Bed-and-Breakfast information. I flew into Glasgow, rented a car and headed east towards Edinburgh.

After getting lost and found several times in this city, I finally found my destination castle.

I took a tour of Edinburgh Castle. This was a breath-taking experience in two ways: the shear beauty of the place and It was a huge, very steep hill, I had to walk up to get to the castle.

Once at the entrance, I asked the guard who was the big bronze statue of and he replied “William Wallace, he is similar to your George Washington in the Americans fight for freedom”.

After the tour of the castle and a peek at the crown jewels it was a much easier trek downhill to the car.

I headed northwest towards Stirling then on to Fort William and Loch Ness. I spent a day and a night in Fort William browsing old museums, enjoying a lovely dinner, complete with local folk musicians and dancers.

In the morning I was off to Loch Ness and in search of the mystery monster.

Loch Ness is a really huge lake 22 miles long with waters as black as pitch, in its deepest parts it’s said to be about 700 feet.

I learned that the legend of ‘Nessie’ the monster dates back to 565 AD. I visited the Loch Ness museum and found some very interesting information. Sonar surveys of the loch using the latest equipment have failed to find any conclusive evidence of Nessie existence, but neither have they proved that she doesn’t exist.

Loch Ness has many moods from the sultry to the serene. Strange currents move across and below the surface and even sturgeon have been known to swim across the loch.

The waters are so black from the depth and pitch it’s hard find anything even on sonar, so who knows what people have seen or not seen. You have to make up your own mind whether Nessie swims freely through those dark waters or not.

Next it was onward to Aberdeen to return the car and go to the stables for my horseback part of the trip which was stationed out of a small town called Tomintoul in the Highlands.

I stayed at the same hotel for the week and the horseback tours headed out in a different direction each day and lasted about 5 to 6 hours. I found Tomintoul to be a sleepy little town with not much action you could say they rolled up the sidewalks at dusk.

On this trip there were three other riders from England and one other lady from the US.

For the week we were all suppose to ride the Highland ponies. This I did not like at all. I found them to be slow and pokey with not much get up a go spirit.

At the end of the day my legs were so tired from the constant urging on of this animal I was miserable. I complained so much they finally let me go out into the pasture and pick another mount.

I chose a high-spirited half Arabian mare for the rest of the week and I was very happy with her.

One of our day trips was to the Glenlivet Distillery where we tied our mounts to the fence and wet inside for the tour and taste test.

I’m not usually much of a straight whiskey drinker but on this day I made an exception. Needless to say the ride home was very interesting. Most days where spent on trails through the hills and crossing streams or forest.

The Heather was not in bloom when I was there and this was a bit disappointing, I could see that the hillsides would be blazing with color just a few weeks after my departure. On our last day in Tomintoul were taken to a nearby town and to watch the one and only Highland Games I have ever seen.

They started out with a parade of horse drawn carriages, bagpipers and all the competitors walking behind them all were dressed in Kilts.

They had dancing, log throwing, tossing the caber, tug of war, and other contest I have know idea what the name of it would be it was not like anything I had ever seen before. Everything was more of a Medieval type atmosphere.

At last much to my dismay, my vacation has come to an end and I must return to New Jersey.

With a smile,

Linda Shute

For people who take golf holidays, golf breaks in Scotland represent the quintessential golfing retreat. There are three main reasons for this. Firstly, Scotland has all the best courses – including the world-class Turnberry, St Andrews and Gleneagles, all offering the most fantastic golf holidays available.

Secondly, the scenery is unparalleled and provides the perfect backdrop to a round of golf. Scotland’s rugged mountains, lush green valleys, thundering waterfalls and ethereal mists all help to create an experience you can really savour. Thirdly, Scotland always is easy to get to, either by road, train or air travel.

Anyone who plans a golf break in Scotland is also probably influenced by knowledge of the country’s long-standing affiliation with the game. It is widely accepted that golf originated in Scotland in the 1100s, with the first recorded game played at Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1456.

Even the word ‘golf’ comes from Scotland – it is thought to have come from the Scots word ‘goulf’, meaning ‘to strike or cuff’. When the game was in its early days and, in fact, right up until the mid-20th century, it was usually played with clubs made from hickory wood, which is why golf played with old-fashioned wooden clubs is now called ‘hickory golf’.

Traditional hickory golf is catching on in a big way. You see, there’s a big secret haunting the manufacturers of modern golf clubs – despite all the ‘improvements’ in golf club technology, you can hit nearly as far with clubs made the original way – with hickory – as you can with the latest club being promoted on the US PGA Tour. What’s more, with hickory golf clubs you can play the game the way it was designed to be played – playing around the bunkers, through the gaps and really thinking about the challenge of the hole.

There are tournaments all over the world for modern-day hickory golf players, and for the last three years one particular tournament has been held in Scotland – golf’s birthplace. The 2007 World Hickory Open took place last month at Craigielaw golf course in East Lothian. As a golf course, Craigielaw is scenically located on the shores of the Firth of Forth with the hills of Fife framing its magnificent backdrop.

Craigielaw golf course presents a challenge for both short and long handicap players. As a result, the course is a popular for golf breaks in Scotland for players at every level. The layout at Craigielaw is such that the wind is nearly always part of the course’s natural defence. The consensus among both pro and amateur golf players is that the organisers picked a course almost perfectly suited to hickory golf.

There is a special physical sensation that hickory golf clubs give you. You know if you’ve hit a good one just by the lovely feeling coming through your hands and you also know if you’ve hit a bad one (especially in a cold Scottish wind) as it feels like a cricket ball has landed on your knuckles!

I managed to come third in the Amateur section, no disgrace but I’m coming back for more. And at last I know what I want from Father Christmas – All the best hickory golf clubs: Persimmon woods with True Temper shafts, a set of matching hickory irons pre-1935, a Cleveland wedge and sand wedge and a Scotty Cameron putter.

Edinburgh Castle

A lone piper plays a haunting lament from the castle walls. Over 200,000 people stand silently holding their breath as the melody evokes a mixture of sadness and pride – of battles lost and won and soldiers gone but not forgotten. The piper plays the last notes as the flames around the brazier flicker and die out.

A thunderous applause and the fireworks begin cascading over and above the walls of the castle. This spectacle marks the end of the annual military tattoo which attracts visitors from all over the world, in late summer, to Scotland’s capital city – Edinburgh.

Built on ancient volcanic rocks, Edinburgh has evolved around the ancient castle which dominates the city. Settlements have been recorded here as early as 600BC.

There is so much to see and do here that you will be spoilt for choice. To experience the essential Edinburgh there are places you need to include in your itinerary.

Holyrood House and Abbey

Steeped in Royal History you can view over 100 portraits of Scottish kings in the Palace. Built in 1671 for Charles 11, it was also home to Mary Queen of Scots for a number of years. The Abbey was founded by David in 1128 and was a popular sanctuary for debtors throughout its history. The Abbey is now a ruin but the palace is still used by the royal family and Church of England.

Lady Stair’s House

Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson are just three of Scotland’s famous sons. Here you will find literary manuscripts and relics including Scott’s writing desk.

Canongate Tolbooth

This museum houses a fantastic collection of tartan and highland dress.

National Museum of Antiquities

Everything you want to know about Scottish life, from the Stone Age to modern times, can be found here.

Gladstone’s Land
This six-storey tenement building from 1620 has been lovingly restored to represent a typical seventeenth century home. In addition it has a shop front displaying goods from the time.

The Cathedral

St Giles cathedral was constructed around the fourteenth century and is situated on the ‘Royal Mile’ between the Castle and Holyrood Palace. Records show that a church has stood here since 854. It is the final resting place of scottish reformer and theologian John Knox whose famous works include ‘The History of the Reformation in Scotland’. The most recent addition is the ‘chapel of the Thistle – a chivalric company of knights of which the Queen is head.

Festivals

Travel to Edinburgh at almost any time of the year and you will find a festival of one sort or another going on. Books, films, comedy, variety acts, international acts, street theatre and many more. Attend the biggest party in the world on New Year’s Eve.

Whatever your interests, Edinburgh has something for you. Walk around this fascinating city and soak up the history that makes Scotland unique in the world.

Scotland is one of the most scenic and historic places in Europe and has always been a popular tourist destination. The country is small in size but had a wide variety of attractions and places that are well worth a visit.

Perhaps best known for whisky or castles, this country has hundreds of historic castle ruins and sites as well as distilleries throughout. But there are also some fantastic landmarks such as the mysterious Loch Ness and the bustling shops of Glasgow.

Britain can be an expensive place for travellers from Europe or America and so it is important to try and find value for money accommodation during your stay. There are hundreds of hostels around Scotland with the Scottish Youth Hostel Association being the biggest hostel chain in the country.

For people who have never stayed in a hostel before they will find the accommodation basic but suitable for a place to stay. A standard hostel will have dorm rooms with 4-12 beds in each room and usually have linen supplied. Depending on the standard of hostel some also offer some excellent facilities such as Internet access or free breakfast.

The rates for a hostel are by far the cheapest for accommodation with prices ranges from £8-£15 per night. These hostels often have city or town centre locations as well making them ideal for seeing the main sights. Most people who stay here tend to be travelling to multiple destinations sometimes around the world and this is an ideal place to meet new people.

There are also budget hotels throughout the country which offer a higher standard of accommodation and more privacy. These often have basic facilities and are not always as central as hostels, usually being located on the outskirts of main cities.

Many of the hotels are rated by the Scottish Tourist Board and a one or two star establishment tend to be the cheapest options. You can get a room at one of these hotels for as little as £25-£35 per night.

If you don’t fancy a hostel then a guest house or bed and breakfast might be a more suitable alternative. These often offer compact rooms but are usually clean and comfortable and with central locations. They are also a lot more personal service and can be of a higher standard than budget hotels and hostels. These are more suitable for travelling families or older travellers and some have facilities that equal high quality hotels, the owners are also usually a good resource for getting tips on local attractions and general information.

The final option for accommodation is a self catering flat, if you are travelling in a group of 6 or above then these can turn out to be quite cost effective as the price of the flat is fixed so the more people you have the cheaper per person it is. Another advantage is that you get privacey for your group and also self catering facilities so you dont have to eat out each night, which can save you quite a bit of money also.

In Scotland, you will keep the fires burning all night and on Christmas Day after having a roaring bonfire and some Scottish Whiskey, you will sit down for a traditional Christmas dinner. In Scotland, you are going to experience the custom of fire, which is a way for celebrants of the Christmas holiday to show their spirit for the day. Fire for some reason represents Christmas in Scotland and watching the tradition is spectacular.

When you plan you cheap holidays to Scotland at Christmas, you must plan a trip around the area to see the beautiful decorations on the houses. After the Christmas celebration you have a few days to rest up for the New Year’s celebration called Hogmanay.

Be prepared because everyone stays up until the New Year arrives. Scotland residents travel to friend’s home right before the New Year to bring in the New Year with friends and some good foods and some more whiskey or a glass of wine. After singing the traditional “Auld Lang Sine”, some people head to bed, but not all. The streets are buzzing with people drinking and wishing everyone a happy New Year. You do want to try to turn in early so you can enjoy some fine dishes on New Year’s Day.

Enjoy some Scottish food and some fine Scottish Whiskey before making your way back home.

No matter where you travel for the holidays, take along the camera and take many pictures for your new family Christmas celebration scrapbook. Imagine a new destination every year and sharing your experience of the world at Christmas with family and friends. When you have some time in between the two holidays, you can do some sightseeing of the local attractions in Scotland as well. The fun and excitement does not end with the week leading up to the New Year. You will find many things to keep you busy and enjoy your cheap holidays in Scotland.
