New Englanders are proud of their region and of the abundance of attractions which highlight the history and culture unique to this area. But they do not just sit back and enjoy it. Museums and attractions are constantly working to enhance the visitor experience, continuing restoration work, adding exhibits or offering a tour with a new twist in a popular destination. Another thing New Englanders are passionate about is food. Lobster is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of New England’s cuisine. But Maine potatoes have found their way out of the fryer and into premium vodka, and the sea breezes along the south coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut help produce award-winning wines. In New England, there is always something new!

Connecticut

Mystic Seaport, the Museum of America and the Sea, is the nations most important maritime museum, but its also the most delightful way to learn about our seafaring history-whaling, fishing, boat building and life in a 19th-century coastal village. Because Mystic Seaport is also a research center, your group has the opportunity to watch as important historic vessels undergo restoration. In 2007, the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling vessel from the great days of sail, will be put in dry dock on-site and visitors will still be able to visit the Morgan and observe this preservation project first-hand. A very popular special exhibit through 2006 is Black Hands, Blue Seas, which chronicles the maritime heritage of African-Americans. In 2007, a special exhibition on Tugboats and their influence on maritime history is being planned.

Rhode Island

The newest addition to the Ocean States attractions is the Majestic, a 149-passenger yacht-style vessel that just launched its first season on Narragansett Bay at the end of April. Your groups will be able to enjoy a one-hour narrated cruise of Newports scenic harbor, a lunch cruise or an elegant dinner cruise.

Massachusetts

Historic Tours of America is diligently acquiring artifacts regarding the Boston Tea Party for the new Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum when it opens in 2007. The museum will be dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the event in Boston Harbor on December 16, 1773, which sparked the revolution. The recently acquired Robinson Tea Chest is one of only two known surviving crates from the event and will be a centerpiece of the new museum.

Other news for 2006 at Historic Tours of America is that your clients taking an Old Town Trolley tour will enjoy a walking tour of Beacon Hill with a costumed guide as part of their package. If your group is looking for something fun to do in the evening, they have introduced a Ghosts andGravestones tour. Half the tour is on Old Town Trolleys, but these trolleys are black with purple fluorescent lights. Guides use keys to let the group into the historic cemeteries where they are met by a gravedigger in costume.

At the western end of the state, the Berkshires offers an abundance of great sightseeing opportunities. At The Mount, the magnificent estate of the author Edith Wharton, groups can take a 45-minute guided tour of the house, including the recently restored formal areas. The freshly planted gardens are spectacular and can be combined with the tour of the house.

Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony, but the Berkshires have an abundance of theatre and music. This summer, the newly restored Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield will reopen after a comprehensive restoration project to bring it back to its turn-of-the-century elegance. It is one of Americas finest theaters to have survived the years intact. Attend a performance if possible, but groups can book tours of the facility to see this architectural treasure.

England is one of the most historically interesting and vibrant countries anywhere in the world. That is why those heading on a vacation to England should visit some of the prime historical sites as part of their trip. With imposing castles, magnificent country estates and fascinating museums history buffs will certainly be entertained whilst visiting England; whether travelling on your own, as a couple or with the family it is hoped that the details of the following sights will give tourists essential vacation ideas.
Regarded by many to be the most marvellous castle in all of England, Warwick is a must see example of medieval castle construction and fortification. Literally it is step back in time, giving visitors the chance to truly experience the world of knights, kings and nobles. The history of Warwick Castle is unbelievably interesting; originally built by William the Conqueror in 1088 it passed hands to various Earls of Warwick and even the Count of Anjou in 1153. Its most famous resident however was Richard Neville, more commonly known as Warwick the Kingmaker. This name has been given to Neville due to immense power during the fifteenth century and the Wars of the Roses, enabling to place various kings onto the English throne for his own political ends. Today it remains one of the best kept examples of a castle in the land.
A vacation in England should also include a visit to the historic city of Bath. This city lying in Somerset has an amazing history from Celtic and Roman times up until the Victorian period. Because of the natural springs present within the city the Romans built up a considerable spa settlement, today some of these baths remain and are must see for travellers, although taking a dip in the waters is not allowed. During the Georgian period the city built up as a considerable spa resort, enticing those from London to ‘take the waters’, meaning that Bath toady has a large amount of sumptuous architecture and an air of luxury.
England has a rich spiritual heritage and as such there are various sites that should be visited whilst on vacation that will give an insight into this history. Naturally the most famous of these spiritual sights is in Canterbury. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site it is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the leader of the Church of England. Canterbury has played host to some of the most tumultuous events in British history, the most infamous probably being the murder of Thomas Becket, at the supposed orders of King Henry II, although conjecture still exists as to whether the king really did want his former best friend dead. Another cathedral worth including in a vacation is Durham; another UNESCO site, this time in the north of England is a fine example of a Norman cathedral; arguably the best in the country.
Another brilliant attraction worth visiting whilst on a vacation in England is Blenheim Palace. Built in the eighteenth century for the Earl of Marlborough, John Churchill and named after his greatest victory it represents the country’s gratitude for Churchill’s military exploits. To find a grander palace anywhere else in the nation would be difficult, as the home of the Churchill family for three hundred years, it was also the home of a famous modern Churchill, Winston, who once again led the country in a war on the continent.
Hopefully these sites give some idea of the historical wealth present in England and why any vacation should include a visit to at least one. A fascinating island proud of its heritage in war, and religion the many attractions will leave the visitor with a greater understanding of why England is so unique.

A vacation in England is ideal for all types of traveller, this diverse and interesting country will enthral and amaze at all turns and leave those on a vacation with a sense of why England is beheld as cultural and scenic gem. No matter what your interests a vacation in England will fulfil your needs, whether you would like to see the rich tapestry of English history, be left breathless by the striking scenery or simply relax in a quaint English village sipping tea and watching the world go by.
In terms of a historical vacation, England can provide tourists with so much history it is difficult deciding where to start. There are castles and manor houses that dot the countryside and even the cities meaning those on vacation can get an impression of this nation’s somewhat turbulent past. Within London there is The Tower that has been a stronghold for almost a thousand years, originally built by William I to control the population it was a royal castle for centuries later witnessing some of the most tumultuous events in the history of England. From the imprisonment of Elizabeth I to the beheading of Anne Boleyn The Tower really will entertain all comers.
For those with a penchant for swashbuckling an integral part of any vacation to England should include a trip to Nottingham. The home of the legendary Robin Hood it is still a city rich in the legacy of this infamous bandit. Head into Sherwood Forest and experience what life was like for the merry men or take a trip to the domineering castle that purviews the entire city as well as much of the surrounding countryside. With some beautiful old buildings and one of the oldest pubs in England a trip to Nottingham is a well worthwhile element of any vacation.
If it is the quintessential England that you wish to see then spend some time in the countryside while on your vacation. Rural East Anglia is beautifully flat and offers panoramas that are like a patchwork of fields and small copses. Many of the towns and villages can be described as postcard scenes with medieval buildings and brilliant alehouses. The way of life in this part of the world is laid back and you may find it hard not to relax and join the locals in a few beers on a sultry summer’s afternoon.
Not only does East Anglia possess some fine villages and countryside, as you travel around on your vacation you will see so much of the English countryside that you may take it for granted, it is well worth taking the time to stop and take in the fine views and vistas. From the rolling hills of the Cotswolds to the ruggedness of the Yorkshire Dales it is hard not to be amazed by rural England. It is so wide and diverse that makes every journey distinctive and highly enjoyable.
The coast of England is a must see for those on vacation, although the weather may not be able to compete with the Mediterranean or the Caribbean it is still a fundamental part of the English psyche. The coastal towns of England offer something different than purely a place to sunbathe, with old world activities like promenading along the seafront and pursuits that are ultimately sedate some may consider the coast a step back in time. If down in Cornwall do not pass up the opportunity to enjoy some clotted cream with an afternoon tea as you watch the gentle coastal way of life unravel before your eyes.
A vacation in England can be breathtakingly exciting or wholly relaxing; the choice is yours. With such a wide variety of activities on offer England really does have something for everyone. You will not be bored at any time and will enjoy yourself thoroughly. This country rarely disappoints, the only thing that is ever questionable is the rather inclement weather.

The county of West Sussex is an ideal destination for a family holiday in England.

It boasts a mix of some beautiful countryside, lovely beaches, quaint villages, busy towns, a wealth of attractions and some fantastic arts and culture.

There’s always something to see and do in West Sussex, so it doesn’t matter whether the sun is shining or it’s pouring with rain. There are plenty of indoor attractions as well as outdoor entertainment for all age groups.

It’s also perfect for a self-catering holiday, as there are many holiday property rentals available in West Sussex.

This area has many great ideas for fun-filled family days out. Whether you’ve got tots or teens, they will appreciate what’s on offer. There’s everything from beaches, amusement parks, countryside and wildlife centres, gardens, farms, historic buildings, galleries, museums, sports facilities and a whole lot more.

The city of Chichester is a good base from which to get to other areas of West Sussex. The city itself also has plenty going on, too. The magnificent cathedral is a must-see. Also here is the Festival Theatre, Chichester Harbour, a good shopping centre and some nice restaurants. Near to the city is Fishbourne Roman Palace, Weald & Downland Museum (an open-air museum which has some lovely traditional rural buildings), West Dean Gardens, Earnley Butterflies and Garden, Goodwood House and more!

There are also some great places to head to along the coast in West Sussex. The towns of Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Selsey are all worth a visit.

Shoreham-by-Sea is a lovely town which has a port, an airport and is a good place to relax, maybe just sit by the river and watch the world go by.

Worthing is situated just a few miles along the coast from Shoreham-by-Sea and has plenty of attractions to suit all tastes, as well as a wealth of shops and a good museum and art gallery located right in the town centre.

Littlehampton is a great traditional seaside town that’s perfect for a fun-filled family day out. The children will love the beach and there is also an amusement park on the seafront, which provides useful cover should it rain during your holiday.

Moving along the coast, Bognor Regis, which was given the title Regis by King George V in 1929, has plenty to offer its visitors. This town is also home to the large holiday centre Butlins. Bognor Regis also has a museum and there is a lovely park, Hotham Park, which is a good place to chill out after a day on the beach. It’s an ideal picnic spot, too.

If you’re looking to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the busier towns in the area, be sure to visit the town of Selsey. You could take a walk by the sea or just stroll around the town and maybe stop off at a café for a cup of tea and cake!

There are also many interesting places to visit away from the coast in West Sussex. There’s the historic market town of Arundel, which boasts a beautiful castle. It’s the second largest castle in England and, along with its fantastic grounds, is well worth a visit. Picturesque Arundel also has a cathedral to see, some lovely architecture to look at, as well as some delightful shops, including antique shops and tearooms. You can also take a boat trip here on the River Arun.

There is so much else to do in West Sussex. If you’re the sporty type, there are many locations and facilities throughout West Sussex. If you like the great outdoors, then you might prefer to see the county by foot or by bike.

West Sussex is brimming with all the ingredients to make an enjoyable and memorable holiday. There’s always something different to do each day and there’s a great selection of self-catering properties here, too, which are ideal for family holidays.

The sun may have set on the English Empire of history books, but by no means is England’s worldly cultural influence waning. The cosmopolitan hot-spots of sophisticated London and avant-garde Manchester speak to the global future while the Roman remnants in Bath and Celtic heritage at Stonehenge stand as monumental tributes to a time past but not forgotten.

Experience England – Culinary Intrigue

The Brits may not traditionally be known, or even praised, for their gastronomic heritage; however, England has recently experienced a culinary renaissance of sorts and can proudly boast 14 of the world’s top 50 restaurants. Erase thoughts of porridge and stodge – the British dining experience has abandoned its starchy past and embarked on a journey through multicultural and international cuisine, particularly in the South. England’s colonial history comes forth in London’s exquisite choice of Indian restaurants. Despite this new food wave, make sure not to pass on the Yorkshire pudding and Beef Wellington when traveling through the North, which offers exceptional renditions of more traditional dishes.

From London to Land’s End

Upon arrival in the English region of this massive island, it is important to include travel outside of London for the full British experience. England’s most southwestern tip of Cornwall is home to the legendary sea-cliffs below Penzance and the dramatic peninsula of Land’s End where a 25 mile trail will take you along some of the most beautiful stretches of ocean. Cornwall is also known for its architectural landmarks, including Cotehele, a most impressive Tudor mansion and museum along the river Tamar. Travel northeast to encounter ancient towns nestled in the picturesque countryside of The Cotswolds. This region is extremely popular for a glimpse into the idyllic English lifestyle with its 14th century stone and thatched roof cottages and cobblestone alleys. Keep in mind that the southern regions are heavily traveled in the months of July and August by locals and foreigners alike due to the warmer weather.

Farther north, the ancient spa town of Bath is famous for the 2000 year-old Roman bathhouses, which are still open to the public, in addition to Saxon ruins and the history of local Christianity told by the Heritage Vaults. Shakespeare buffs should not miss Stratford-upon-Avon, his home town located in the Midlands. Shakespeare and his family are buried at the Holy Trinity Church in the heart of town. While visiting the most northern regions, travel through York to see Europe’s largest Gothic cathedral, York Minster, and walk along the immaculately preserved medieval street of The Shambles. Even more enchanting are the still-standing city walls that enclose a magical mix of history and modernity in a city that was once the Danish capital of Viking England.

A Region of Global Heritage

Aside from England’s ancient history, no other nation has had such a hand in human progress in the modern era. At one time the English Empire encompassed stretches of the globe from Australia and India to Canada and America. England helped push the world stage into Industrial Revolution; the Midlands are home to the world’s first industrial cities. The land of Chaucer, Shakespeare and Dickens, Saxons, Celts and Normans, is an intriguing and essential journey for anyone interested in the formation of contemporary global culture.

A tour of England can be an excellent way to experience all this unique culture has to offer. By ensuring your tour keeps away from the major tourist destinations, the real England is opened up to the traveller. Beautiful countryside, unique villages and towns as well as some of the most historically rich monuments in the world are all just a short drive away. Depending on what kind of tour you are likely to undertake there are options for all types of traveller, whether looking for luxury or travelling on a budget, England amazes and enthrals at every turn.
If you are looking for scenic beauty no place in England is better than the Lake District for your tour. The Lakes contain the five highest mountains in England as well as the deepest lake. In this unique region two national parks are situated, both are considered areas of outstanding natural beauty and subsequently are legally protected to keep the sublime landscapes and wealth of wildlife in abundance.
It is truly the great outdoors and as you tour the mountains and lake shores you will see some of the best flora and fauna England has to offer. It is not just the scenery in the Lakes that is worth seeing; each village and town has its own unique culture and heritage. Whether this may be the city of Carlisle or the small town of Kendall, (famed for its mint cake) it is well worth adding to the itinerary of your tour.
If you would prefer to enter a less rugged area of England on your tour, the Cotswolds offer idyllic beauty that could be straight from ‘Tolkein’s Shire.’ Once again, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty its genteel attitude is visible at every turn. This pretty part of England can be described as quintessential; the villages you will pass through on your tour are literally straight from the postcards and represent all that is right with England.
This area is the reason why so many have written about this gorgeous landscape of gentle slopes dotted with English oak. There is no prettier site in the world than a sunrise in the Cotswolds, as the sun envelopes the shallow, mist filled valleys, your heart will raise to new plains of enjoyment. No place will show England in a better light while you are on your tour.
If you would like to discover some of the history of England there is a historical wealth that is hard to match anywhere in the world. Castles and stately homes are present in much of the countryside, and even the cities. Learning about the various dukes and lords who have owned these estates is of fascinating interest and even those who have no great love of history will find it hard not to be moved by harrowing tales of love, war and deceit.
England is a very old country and hence its history is extensive, whether a fan of the medieval period, with its castles and brutal battles or a fan of the civil war period when families were pitted against each other in the worst period of strife the country has ever seen, all comers will be enthralled. From these periods all the way up to modern times and the two world wars, visitors will be amazed by the wealth of information on offer as you tour this magical land.
As well as these aspects there are the sporting attractions that should make up an element of your itinerary for your tour of England. England has the finest football (soccer) league in the world and if you can get hold of tickets the experience is not to be missed. With some of the oldest race tracks in the world, horse racing also makes a brilliant addition to your tour if you like a flutter. Added to these sports there is also the quintessential pursuit of the English, cricket. Listening to the sound of leather on willow in the dying stages of a sultry summer’s day is something all tourists should experience; this is England in a nutshell.
Of course England has some very well developed tourist attractions for visitors, it is worth however including other elements on your tour away from the tourist trail. Whether this is experiencing a village cricket match, eating in a tea room somewhere in Lake District or exploring the grounds of a seventeenth century manner. The real England is out there for you to see, get off the beaten track and strive to find it when you embark on your tour.
